Device Reprogramming

Ocean Signal Recoding Information

Does you device need recoding?

Are you moving country or have a device with a different country code?

Your device will send a distress signal and the signal contains a Unique Identifier Number (UIN), called the Hex ID. This number is not just a serial number—it’s coded with critical information, including the Country Code for the nation where the beacon needs to be registered. The Hex ID embedded in the beacon’s memory includes the Maritime Identification Digits (MID) of the country it was originally programmed for (e.g., Australia is 503). If the beacon activates, the distress signal goes to the Cospas-Sarsat system, which tells Search and Rescue authorities: “A distress is coming from an Australian-registered beacon.” If you have a device with a different country code it will still work but the process will be slower.

What happens during a recode?

– The permanent Hex ID/UIN coded into the beacon’s internal memory changes to suit to the country chosen. An authorised dealer such as ourselves for Ocean Signal devices, can change this information using our specialised equipment and software. This involves a small fee.

Key Takeaway: You can update your emergency contact details online for free, but you cannot change the country code or MMSI embedded in the Hex ID without reprogramming the unit.

Verify the Hex ID: Check the 15-character Hex ID/UIN printed on the beacon’s label. The first few digits indicate the programmed country code.

Contact an Authorised Dealer: Find a local authorised dealer for the beacon’s manufacturer (like ourselves for Ocean Signal) and inform them of the required country change. They will quote the reprogramming service.

Register: Once the beacon has been physically reprogrammed with the correct new country code, you must then register the new Hex ID with the national authority of the specific country (e.g. AMSA in Australia).
